Dance is a cycle of giving and receiving support. In addition to rehearsing and performing, the company offers Community in Motion workshops designed primarily for adolescent females. Our goal is to encourage these young women to experience their bodies as vessels of strength. Women of all ages need to command control of their own bodies. Our aim is to embody that control through dance. We encourage dancers to experience how they feel when they can lift and be lifted, rather than to focus on the appearance of their movements.” |

CLASSES
Community in Motion workshops are specifically designed to meet the needs of the participants. Classes are taught by the company members, each of whom has had extensive training and experience in her area of expertise. The focus of each class relates back to our mission of finding strength and support from the inside out. Below is a list of classes that the company offers. Contemporary Dance: The Thrill of Motion Combining high energy and robust athleticism, together we launch into the thrill of motion as we ride the “sweet spot” of momentum. Class begins with a fluid sequence of movements designed to strengthen the core of the body while simultaneously creating mobility in the joints. Particular emphasis is placed on approaching full-bodied phrasework with muscular ease and a center-driven force powered by the pelvis. Dancing is a body language that translates the imagination into a visceral form of personal expression. Like a fingerprint, each step is distinctly yours. In an energetic, rigorous and positive environment, we transcend our personal edges through dance. Influences: Jawole Zollar, Joy Kellman, David Dorfman, Lisa Race. Dancing Together: Introduction to Partnering Gender-neutral partnering is part of most contemporary dance work. This class introduces participants to the technical and energetic underpinnings of partnering. We do exercises to increase body listening— heightening our awareness of the dancers around us and of how we work together. Beginning with simple contact and then weight sharing, the students learn two to three lifts, and incorporate them into a larger movement phrase. Core Fusion Core Fusion® fuses elements of Pilates, yoga, core-conditioning and stretching to produce a strong and agile body. With an emphasis on breathing, the focus, intensity and challenge of this class encourages participants to work on core-strength from the inside out. Class is non-competitive and non-comparative. |
Kundalini Yoga Kundalini Yoga focuses on flowing seamlessly through movement postures while incorporating the breath in order to open and cleanse the nervous and glandular systems. Class is designed to focus the mind on experiencing the body as a vessel of strength and support. Beginning Capoeira Capoeira is an African-Brazilian martial art form with dance, integrity, and community support at its roots. This introductory class situates capoeira in an historical context while also teaching basic maneuvers and songs. The class is designed for movers with varying degrees of experience, and connects the participants' own challenges and strengths with the spirit of capoeira. Extreme Social Dancing These classes promote and present the rich cultural legacy of social dancing. Participants are encouraged to discover their individuality while learning about the history behind each dance. Partner dancing is a lifetime social skill that provides leadership skills and promotes a healthier existence both physically and mentally. Classes are designed to address musicality, balance and fluidity of movement while increasing stamina and leg strength. Dance Meets Technology Dance Meets Technology allows artists to experiment with the use of video projections and sound when combined with choreography. Participants are introduced to software programs such as Isadora and Eyecon to allow exploration into the limitless possibilities of dance and technology. Some set-up time and equipment required.
